Rocket Racket is a Mom & Pop record label that specializes in unique, mostly power-pop artists and produces small-run releases on cassette, vinyl, and/or CD. The label's proprietor, producer, and primary artist is Christopher Earl. He goes way back here in Rochester, NY, with various R&B, R&R, and pop bands. This site was created by a fan of Rocket Racket Records with Chris' permission. I do know Chris and know that he is motivated by pursuit of fun and (pop) art. Heck, I suppose he can make his real money mowing lawns! Anyway, most of these recordings are made on a shoestring with relatively low-tech studio tricks. They are, however, very cool!

here's what's happening

The latest from Christopher Earl (June 1999):

"...FLOWER CITY POP(the Rochester underground pop scene). A compilation exploring garages, basements, and bedrooms for beat and harmony here in Rochester NY. Hope to release it this fall. Maybe this could be a series, we'll see. "

CD Cover Get the Squires for the first time on CD! Culled from the past decade's series of delightful DIY neo-psychedelic pop cassettes. Rochester basement pop hero shows he can do it nearly all by himself! Roy Wood? Brian Wilson? Ray Davies? You get the idea....

Ever since I got my copy of the "Shell Beach" cassette a few years ago I've been a fan of the Squires of the Subterrain. Why wouldn't I, also being a guy who would spent hour after hour with some cheap instruments and a four track cassette recorder. I also like the "influences:" sixties pop that probably started shortly after Brian Wilson decided to go for broke, so to speak.  Boy I'd get a kick out of seeing Christopher Earl running around in a fire helmet with some torches by the pool too. Of course you gotta be a fan of the 70's 80's and 90's power pop and neo-psych bands that followed (too many to mention). Anyway here's some images of some of the Squires of the Subterrain cassette covers from my personal collection, probably long out of print! (You can get the best of on the CD!)    -Chas
